Overview

The Department of Plastic Surgery at Tata Memorial Centre is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for cancer patients through a comprehensive range of reconstructive procedures. Our expertise encompasses Breast reconstruction following mastectomy, intricate Head and Neck reconstruction after ablative surgery, and comprehensive Lymphedema management to improve patient comfort and function. We specialize in Facial Reanimation to restore expression and Secondary reconstructions in head and neck cancer/ breast cancers, addressing complex challenges that may arise. Furthermore, our team is highly skilled in bone and soft tissue reconstruction for various cancer sites. This year marks a significant milestone as we have collectively completed over 10,000 free flap procedures. Annually, our dedicated surgeons perform nearly 1400 free flap surgeries across Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, ACTREC, and our network of peripheral centers, demonstrating our commitment to providing advanced reconstructive care to many patients. The Department of Plastic Surgery at ACTREC, has now inaugurated a state-of-the-art Microvascular Skills Laboratory, further strengthening its commitment to excellence in surgical education, innovation, and patient care.

The new laboratory is equipped with high-end operating microscopes and a full range of advanced microvascular instruments, designed to simulate real operating room conditions. This facility adds to the legacy of Tata Memorial Centre, which is widely recognized as a national leader in microvascular and reconstructive surgery, particularly in complex oncologic reconstruction. The laboratory is also enabled with a remote monitoring and teaching facility, allowing renowned mentors from across India and internationally to observe procedures in real time and guide trainees virtually. This hybrid teaching model expands access to expert mentorship, promotes global academic collaboration, and ensures consistent, high-quality training irrespective of geographical boundaries.

Master the Art of Microsurgery

The Microsurgery Course at ACTREC is a comprehensive 5-day program, held from Monday to Friday under the guidance of experienced microsurgeons. This course offers invaluable hands-on training in microsurgical techniques, catering to both individuals embarking on a career in microsurgery and seasoned surgeons seeking to hone their skills. Recognizing the need for flexibility, the course is conducted year-round, with dates arranged to suit the mutual convenience of participants and the training faculty at ACTREC.

  • Format:- Lectures, video demonstrations, dry lab, wet lab, supervised practice, and skill assessment

Learning Objectives

  • Adaptation to operating microscope and micro-instrument ergonomics
  • Basic suturing skills on gloves and synthetic models
  • End-to-end and end-to-side microvascular anastomosis on rat vessels
  • Troubleshooting leaks, thrombosis, and revision techniques

  • Excellent Resources: Features 10 state-of-the-art Zeiss microscopes, S and T microsurgery instruments & Ethicon sutures , accommodating 10 participants per batch.
  • Structured Learning: Begins with a detailed video demonstration of microvascular anastomosis techniques.
  • Progressive Skill Development: The course includes training in:
    Adapting to the operating microscope.
    Basic suturing skills on rubber gloves.
    Performing anastomosis on rat blood vessels.

  • Indian surgeons/trainees: INR 30,000
  • International surgeons/trainees:USD 800

Daily Schedule:-

  • Orientation, microscope setup, ergonomics.
  • Video demonstration of microvascular techniques.
  • Dry lab: suturing drills on gloves and tubes.
Tuesday
  • End-to-end arterial anastomosis on Rats.
  • Patency testing and leak management.
Wednesday
  • End to End Venous Anastomosis (RAT).
Thursday
  • Venous End- Side Anastomosis (RAT).
Friday
  • End to End and End to Side Anastomosis on small caliber vessels..

Schedule of Workshops in 2026

Microvascular Workshop will be held every 3 months in 2026 in the Months of February, May, August and November. Exact dates will be updated on the website few weeks prior to the workshop.
