Open Day

ACTREC Open Day December 1-2, 2011

In 1995, the Cancer Research Institute (CRI -then located in the Tata Memorial Centre’s Parel campus) organized an ‘Open Day’, to showcase its research programs to undergraduate and graduate students from science colleges of Mumbai. This tradition has continued after a gap of just one year (2002) after CRI’s relocation to the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) in Navi Mumbai. ACTREC celebrated its 8th Open Day on Thu. 2nd and Fri. 3rd December 2010, and threw open its doors to student groups, putting some of its research programs on display.

In four half day sessions, over 500 students and their accompanying faculty from prominent science degree colleges of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai visited the Centre. Each session began with an introductory lecture that touched upon the basic research and clinical focus of ACTREC. Batches of 10-12 students were then led by volunteers to various participating labs/ depts./ facilities. In 2010, demonstrations were organized by Varma Lab, Shirsat Lab, Bose Lab, Gude Lab, Mulherkar Lab, Laboratory Animal Facility, Common Instrument Room, Mass Spectrometry, Composite Lab and Radiodiagnosis.

Each of these 10-minute demonstrations highlighted a technologic platform used to further the group’s research programs. The visiting students got the opportunity to see cutting edge research up close and to interact with scientists and research scholars on a one on one basis. Open Day thus fulfilled its objecting of focussing the attention of bright young students from Mumbai and Navi Mumbai colleges towards cancer research, and the opportunities for higher education and careers at the Centre.
