Histone H2B (Homo sapiens)

The N terminus tail of histone H2B is essential for chromatin condensation. [Anne-Elisabeth de la Barre et al ,(2001) ]

It is markedly deficient in variants. However research has reported two testis specific variants of H2B.[Kavitha Sarma et al,(2005)]. These appear to have very specialized functions in chromatin compaction and transcription, repression, particularly during gametogenesis [Rohinton T. Kamakaka et al ,(2005) ]
