Histone modifying enzymes: The Writers

Post-translational modification of histones is a function of various enzymes that catalyze the addition of various chemical groups like acetyl-, methyl-, phosphate-, ubiquitin- etc. from one substrate to another. These enzymes have specific domains to recognize histone substrates. There are 52 unique writers that belong to 4 different categories. The different categories are Histone acetyltransferases (HAT/KAT), Histone methyltransferases (HMT/KMT), Kinases, Ubiquitinases etc.

Types of Writers Arginine methyltransferase, Lysine acetyltransferase, Lysine methyltransferase, Lysine ubiquitin ligase, Serine/threonine/tyrosine kinase
