Histone Lysine Acetylation

Histone acetylation is predominantly associated with transcriptional activation. Acetylation occurs exclusively on lysine residues of histones by enzymes called as the 'lysine acetyltransferase'. The acetyl-CoA acts as the acetyl group donor. Acetylation causes neutralization of the positively charged lysine residues. Acetylation increases the weight of histone peptide by ~42 Da per acetyl moiety.
