Histone Variants

Histone variants are non-canonical and non-allelic with a difference of few to several amino acids. These are expressed throughout the cell cycle therefore known as replication-independent histones. Histone variants are found as single genes and are distributed throughout the genome, and their transcripts have poly(A) tails. They are known to confer novel structural and functional properties along with variants specific post-translational modifications.
